“You don’t have enough faith,” Jesus told them. “I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible.” Matthew 17:20 NLT
The mustard seed is the tiniest of seeds, but as it grows it develops strong branches and becomes the largest of all garden plants. Its branches grow long so birds can make their nests and find shade. (Mark 4:30). Within the church we have used this as an explanation for when life is hard you just have to have a little faith.
My fear is that we believe we just need faith the SIZE of a mustard seed at some point it stops growing into the magnificent tree it was meant to be. We fail to own the great truth that the power Jesus had to move mountains, bring healing (either physically or emotionally), reconcile relationships, etc. ultimately live in us too. Yet, something prevents many of us from having radiant faith.
There have been many times when I’ve prayed prayers only to get the exact opposite of what I prayed for, so we stop praying or believing in the power of God Almighty and his ability to change our world through us. Yet WE HAVE TO BE FOCUSED AND WILLING. It’s not a super power that we call upon to break a wall so we can go through it. It’s the power that if we are called to climb the mountain rather than move it, we can do so knowing that the power is in the peace and stillness of the mountainside.
What is the size of your faith? This is not a comparison game, it’s about has it grown. Some people have a strong faith, but ceasing to grow our faith is dangerous. Have you tapped into the power and belief outlined in Matthew 17:20? Are you truly relying on God in your circumstances or fighting the battle more on your own strength? Has your faith stalled out as a tiny shrub, wondering how God will ever change the issues you face? Dig deep into the fertile soil of God’s Promises. HE IS WITH YOU!
A faith that believes firmly we can move mountains eventually will reap a harvest. Our God is a Good God who loves us and offers us the same tools and resources he did to Jesus so we can do more than just survive this world, but to THRIVE!!!
